The Department of Biotechnology is a vibrant and multidisciplinary hub that bridges the gap between biological sciences and cutting-edge technology. Established with a mission to foster innovation and excellence, the department aims to prepare students and researchers to address global challenges in health, agriculture, environment, and industry through biotechnological solutions. Biotechnology is a golden tool to solve some of the key global problems like global warming, Pandemics and above all; poverty. Recent advances in Bioprocess Engineering, Metabolic Engineering, Nutraceuticals, Food Processing, Bioremediation, Genomics, Proteomics, Bioinformatics, Bio-Nanotechnology and Bioenergy have made Biotechnology even more powerful. Career opportunities are plentiful both in India as well as in abroad with biotech & pharmaceutical companies, chemical, agriculture and healthcare sectors. They can also be employed in the areas of planning, production and management of bio-processing industries.
The Department possesses highly qualified faculty members from various Premier Institutions of India and abroad working on various frontier research areas of Biotechnology such as Biochemical Engineering, Metabolic Engineering, Food and Agricultural Biotechnology, Environmental Biotechnology, Biomaterials Engineering, Interfaces, Bioinformatics and Nanomaterials, Nanobiotechnology. This ensures world class curriculum and pedagogy. The department collaborates with various renowned academic and industrial partners worldwide to ensure students and researchers gain exposure to the latest developments in this field.
- Distinguished Faculty: Faculty members hold doctoral degrees from top institutions (IITs,NITs & State Universities) and have completed post-doctoral research at prestigious global institutions (e.g., City College of New York, UNIST, and NIT Warangal).
- Research Funding: Approximately ₹3 Crore has been secured from government agencies (DST, DBT) and consultancy projects for R&D.
- Research Contributions: Faculty have published over 120 research papers, including 25 in Q1 journals and 20 in high-impact journals, along with 13 patents and three startups.
- Student Achievements:Students have participated in events like the Guinness World Record in Khelo India, attended international programs, initiated four startups, and filed four patents.

Prof. P. Azhagu Saravana Babu, a visionary educator, mentor, and researcher with an unwavering passion for pushing academic boundaries. With 17 years of teaching and research experience, he has left an indelible mark on countless young minds. A true trailblazer in the field of Biotechnology, Prof. P. Azhagu Saravana Babu has secured multiple grants for his ground-breaking research, earning recognition from esteemed funding agencies like DST, DBT, and AICTE.
Prof. P. Azhagu Saravana Babu is passionate about his research in the area of Industrial Biotechnology, Food Process Engineering, and Nutraceuticals and published 3 patents, 50+ International research articles, and authored 1 Book with 10 Book chapters (CRC Press, London, Taylor & Series and Apple Press) and he has guided and produced 2 doctoral students.
With vast expertise in curriculum revision, Prof. P. Azhagu Saravana Babu has played a pivotal role in shaping the academic curriculum at Anna University. He has also accomplished Deputy Director (Research) at SSIET, Chennai and he spearheaded several prestigious funded projects and leading the Biosafety Committee as Chairman at Vel Tech.
As a certified Industrial safety expert, he has contributed to acquire research centre recognition at MVJCE, Bangalore and involved various Industrial Interactions, Incubations, MOUs and startups.
As a passionate researcher, inspiring mentor, and dedicated educator, Prof. P. Azhagu Saravana Babu is coordinating DBT sponsored PG programme as a Programme Coordinator and he is also overseeing international and Indian PhD scholars at Vel Tech. He has been awarded "Best Teacher" at MVJCE, Bangalore in 2009 and also awarded as a "Senior Research Fellow" by CSIR & UGC for the year 2012 and 2014 respectively.
He is also contributing to cutting-edge knowledge through associate editor and reviewer for reputed journals like Wiley Publications, Journal of Agriculture and Food Research and Journal of Food Process Engineering, Research in Autism Spectrum Disorders. It is imperative that students pursue the program by solving engineering challenges, with an emphasis on the most recent scientific and technological advancements. The use of practical scenarios in instruction has become commonplace for the advancement of engineering aptitude and professional abilities. The combination of faculty-based research-based teaching, student-based activity-based learning, in-class instruction, field practice, substantial reading, teacher mentorship, and student self-study achieves effective teaching and learning outcomes.
