What is Emotional Intelligence? Does it really matter?
Emotional Intelligence (EI), also known as Emotional Quotient (EQ), is the capability of individuals to recognize their own emotions and those of others, understanding different feelings and using this emotional information towards cognitive thinking and behavior.
EI affects your everyday decisions of an individual both at the personal and business levels. Staying happy, motivated, confident, likable, committed, productive, efficient etc., has a direct connect to the EI level.
EI influences your outlook and attitude towards life, a person with high level of EI has a happier outlook towards life and displays a positive attitude at all times. EI acts as the invisible driver towards excellence.
The best way to develop EI
The best way to develop EI is by understanding one’s self, knowing his/her strengths, weaknesses, preferences, values and emotions.
Engineers have challenges at workplace to work in teams to make presentations, pitch in ideas, clarifying doubts in the process and communicating with different departments. Hence, the strong ability to read other emotions and act accordingly plays a key role to succeed. Emotional intelligence can bring the transformation from being a good engineer to becoming a truly successful engineer.
The eager beavers of the present generation stand a better chance of a getting a Job with a higher level of EI.
